As the larger boar was coming up from the other direction, this younger one came onto the scene and approached from the opposite direction. Once it got a look of the big one, it didn't stick around. Though I did get some nice backlit shots. I like how the fur edges are illuminated by the setting sun like a golden aura of spirit 💖 #joyfulimagesbyajs #ncwildlife #naturenc #pocosinlakes #wildliferefuge

He and I, we had a moment this evening and it was my favorite moment 😍. I just love black bears. The end. #joyfulimagesbyajs #ncwildlife #naturenc #wildliferefuge #pocosinlakes

Once I commented to a park host out West that I loved seeing so many hummingbirds zipping through the campground. He smiled and nodded happily, saying, in a heavy Southern accent, "Yes, these here woods are thick with hummingbirds." It was such a perfect use of the word "thick" that it made me want to say it with abandon, with a nod and a smile and an accent. So here goes: "Yes, these here woods are thick with bears."

Berry hunt.

I never used to think of black bears when I thought of our coast, but now I know better. Out there, we've got what is likely the densest population of black bears in the lower 48. And they're some of the largest, because they've got an excellent food supply. All you've got to do is open your eyes. -- We've made it a tradition to turn off 64 onto a dirt road near Alligator River to look for bears on our way home from the beach. In a span of a few minutes, we spotted seven last week. (That's not even our record.) -- We spent a while watching this darling juvenile chowing down on berries after taking a swim in an irrigation canal.

Every year, we stop at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge on our way to the OBX and take the same photo. The first year it was a candid, and there was just one tiny girl holding her dad's hand. Life has been good to us.
